How to Get Your PCO Licence for London
If you’re wondering how to get a PCO licence, here are the essential steps you need to follow:
1. The correct application forms.
2. The medical check.
3. The DBS check (criminal record check).
4. The topographical test.
5. The English language requirement (SERU) and speaking & listening tests.
This list covers the main steps you’ll need to take before submitting your PCO licence application and helps you understand how to get your PCO licence.
PCO Licence Pre-Requisites
Before applying, please note the following:
- You must be 21 or over. If you’re under this age, please don’t apply.
- You need a full UK or European driving licence held for at least 3 years (excluding any periods of disqualification). If your driving licence is nearing 3 years or has already reached that milestone, feel free to contact us.
- An enhanced DBS check issued within the last 3 months. If you have any convictions or cautions, this may affect your eligibility. Please seek advice before applying.
- You must undergo a medical check (Group 2 licence equivalent). All drivers, new or existing, must meet the same medical standards as HGV and PSV drivers. If you have any medical conditions, it may affect your application, so please consult with us first.
- Pass the topographical skills test, which is a map reading test. We offer full support and training to help you with this.
- You must meet the English language requirement by passing the SERU and speaking & listening exams.
Please remember, if you have penalty points on your driving licence, criminal convictions/cautions, or pending court cases, this could affect your eligibility. If you’re unsure, call 0343 222 4444 for clarification before proceeding.
Make sure you meet all the requirements before applying and spending your money!
1. Application Forms
To become a mini cab or chauffeur driver in London, you’ll need to complete the correct forms. TfL regularly updates the application process, so it’s best to leave it to the experts. Don’t worry—we can fast-track your full application to TfL.
If you prefer to start the process now from your mobile phone, visit our online PCO application portal: www.pco-application.com
If you prefer to visit in person, opt for our Platinum Package, and we’ll take care of your entire application, ensuring it gets fast-tracked to TfL.
2. Medical Check
We strongly recommend all applicants undergo a medical check early on. This will help identify any potential issues before they become a problem.
We can provide a medical declaration form. If you’re a Platinum Package client, we’ll supply all forms at no extra charge. Don’t worry if you have high blood pressure or diabetes—TfL won’t stop you from applying as long as you meet certain health standards, which we’ll guide you through.
3. Complete Your DBS Check
Complete an enhanced DBS check with an approved online disclosure company. All PCO licence applicants must complete this check.
Once the DBS check is done, you have 4 months to submit your full application to TfL. Don’t worry if you have past convictions, especially if they’re spent. We understand TfL’s guidelines, so feel free to contact us if you’re concerned about anything in your past.
4. Topographical Test & SERU Exam
As part of your PCO licence application, you’ll need to demonstrate your topographical skills (map reading). We provide full training and support, regardless of your background or learning abilities. We were also a TfL-approved Topographical Test Centre, so you’re in good hands.
The topographical exam is a crucial part of the process, covering 75% of the exam. Try our FREE Topographical Test Practice.
We also offer full SERU training packages, which focus on safety, equality, and regulatory understanding. This multiple-choice exam is based on the TfL handbook, so make sure you prepare for it as well as the topographical test. Try our FREE SERU Exam.
Unlike other minicab firms, we offer professional independent training across London. Our fully skilled trainers will ensure you get the best help possible, no matter how challenging you find it!
5. Go Through the Application Checklist
Once we have all your documents, we will submit your application to TfL. To avoid unnecessary delays, we recommend using our services. We’ll make sure your application is complete and meets TfL’s requirements.
We can submit your entire PCO licence application online to TfL and offer unlimited training advice to help you succeed in your new career. Once your application is fast-tracked to TfL, they’ll take up to 4 weeks to reply and invite you to sit your exams. You can rebook your test if the date is too soon. Start preparing for the exams as soon as your application is submitted, so you’re fully ready to succeed!
