Disabled Private Hire Drivers

The Equality Act 2010 aims to protect disabled people and prevent disability discrimination and as such becoming a licensed Private Hire driver is open to anyone and all employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people. You will still need to complete an application form like anyone else and still go through the same processes but there are some things to consider before sending in your application.

Group 2 Medical Fitness

As with all PCO Licence applicants you will still need to meet the guidelines set out in the DVLA Group 2 medical standards by having a medical check-up with  a GP. The examination usually takes around 30 minutes and you will be asked questions about the following topics:

• cardiovascular
• endocrine system
• musculoskeletal
• neurological
• psychiatric
• vision

Based on your answers/medical records and the results of the tests the doctor will give his/her professional opinion as to whether you satisfy the DVLA Group 2 medical standards and they will also complete the remainder of the PHV/204 form, sign it and put their surgery stamp on it.

Although it’s important that everyone has the same equal opportunities there is also an aspect of public safety and safety of minicab passengers and that means that there are some medical conditions that will mean you are not able to get licensed. These include:

• Epilepsy
• Insulin treated/insulin dependant diabetes
• Monocular or poor vision
• A progressive degenerative illness
• A history of alcohol or drug abuse
• A history of mental illness or severe mental handicap
• A physical disability which might impair the ability to discharge the requirements of a vocational driver
• Heart problems
• Neurological or neurosurgical disorders (.e.g strokes, blackouts, head injuries)
• Certain prescribed medications.
